Prom Flowers - Your Questions Answered!

There are flowers to suit every occasion and choosing the right prom flowers for your corsage for Prom Night can be quite difficult.

There are so many things you want to get right - so here are some quick answers to questions you may have about choosing the right flowers.

There is a special flower dedicated to each calendar month...

January - Carnation February - Violet March - Daffodil April - Daisy May - Lily of the Valley June - Rose July - Water Lily August - Poppy September - Morning Glory October - Marigold November - Chrysanthemum December - Holly

Obviously they are not all suited to having in a corsage! (The Holly could be a bit painful!) So your choice is a very personal one.

Your date is the one who is supposed to bring you your corsage on the night, and hopefully it matches your prom dress and his boutonniere!

To make sure the prom flowers are the ones you want, there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting your date know exactly what you want for both yourself and your date. Why not visit the florist together? Or you could show him a photo of what you want.

If your gown is a strapless one or your prom dress is of a design that makes the traditional corsage difficult to wear here are a few tips...

There are a number of ways to display your prom flowers -

* You can wear them in your hair, in which case make sure your hairdresser is aware of this when she does your hair. (Especially if it is an updo).

* You can wear them on a velvet ribbon around your neck.

* You can pin them to your evening bag.

* You can tie them around your ankle with a pretty ribbon.

* Depending on the style of prom dress you are wearing, you can pin them to your waist.

Remember to order your prom flowers at least two weeks before prom night as florists get extremely busy in your area when prom night is approaching and you want to be able to get the prom corsage and boutonniere that you want. It is also prime time for weddings too so your florist is going to be very busy.

Discuss your budget with the florist as she will be a great help in designing your prom flowers. Whether it be a corsage to wear on your wrist, or a nosegay, your florist will be able to advise you.

If your budget is not great don't worry - a cheaper flower used in a lovely corsage will look as fabulous as the expensive flowers.

Your florist can also be a great help in designing your corsage - just take in a photo of your prom dress so she can get an idea of what will suit both you and your budget.

Your date's boutonniere doesn't necessarily HAVE to match your prom flowers, it all depends on you and your date.

Popular flowers are the mini sweetheart roses, standard roses, dendrobium orchids, alstroemeria lilies and small flowers such as cornflowers and freesias.

Thinking of preserving your corsage after prom night? There are some florists who will freeze dry your prom flowers but this is quite expensive. I found the best way is to have the sweetheart roses and after prom night just hang them upside down until they dry out. Or if you just want to keep one, press it in a big heavy book. (Wrap it in kitchen paper first or you may stain the page of the book.)

The other method of preserving your prom flowers as an eternal keepsake that I think is quite lovely is to remove all the petals (again the roses are the best for this) and keep them in a bowl until they dry out. Sprinkle some rose oil on them and use them as a pot pouri on your dressing table - the smell will bring back all those lovely memories of the night!

And don't forget a really nice touch is to make sure your Mom gets a nice bunch of flowers as well...talk your date into paying for it and she'll think you're wonderful!
